About

This is the blog of the elective course entitled “Freehand Drawing in Architecture” at Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Architecture Department of Architecture, tutored by Aslıhan Şenel in ’20-’21 online spring semester.

The course, which started over a decade ago*, explores the processes of making by drawing and by a reflective practice of thinking and writing on what we draw. The course developed with the collaboration of colleagues over the years. The framework of daily tasks, variety of materials, and on site explorations is a result of fruitful collaboration with Ozan Avcı, with whom we shared similar enthusiasms on drawing and fieldwork between 2011-2017. The course gained a new interest in the acts of drawing after 2017, with more emphasis on the processes of mark making, line drawing, and challenges of architectural (drawing) norms. Between 2017-2020 in this course, we have collaborated with my post-graduate students (Elif Hant, Buse Özçelik, Ece Duran), who have also explored similar issues in their respective thesis.

Usually the aim would be working out in the city (Istanbul) and be open to the exchanges at the specific sites. We value working collaboratively at the course in order to acknowledge individual, multiple, and collective knowledges. This year in the pandemic conditions, we continue to work from home, nevertheless try to make the process interactive and collective.
