This photograph exhibits an impressive composition of light, perspective and architecture. Especially the left part of the image displays amazing contrast between light and dark, distant and close, empty and full. Stark contrast between darkness and light is the photographer’s choice to embrace this brutal architecture with strong lines that create openings, movements and structure. Punched openings, extreme corners and the intimidating image created by the architect is recreated by the photographer with a monochrome, wide angle. In order to represent this I wanted to use two colors, many folds and a black background while focusing on the left part of the photo, stressing openings and corners that create the iconic characteristic of Salk Institute.
One of the interesting parts of this study was realizing how our perception can be tricked if lines (which hint us perspective, therefore size and distance) and colors (or shades in this instance which indicate orientation and layering) are not working together like they usually do; where their contradiction causes a misguidance to user. This is a powerful tool that has been always used by the experienced artists and craftsmen of various visual fields.
